Problem overview
Fast charging on a Galaxy is a negotiation, not a fixed speed. The phone, the cable and the adapter must all agree on a protocol — Samsung uses USB Power Delivery with PPS for its 25W and 45W modes — and if any part of the chain does not support it, the phone quietly falls back to a slow 5W or 10W charge. That is why a phone that charged fully in an hour can suddenly take four hours after nothing more than a cable swap.
The three things that actually decide charge speed are the chain (cable and adapter), the port (contact quality), and temperature. Heat is the one most people miss: One UI deliberately reduces charge current when the battery gets warm, so a phone charging under a pillow, in the sun, or while you play a game will charge slowly by design. The Protect battery setting, which caps charging at 85%, and the normal trickle phase above 80% also look like faults but are not.
Work through the chain in order. Confirm the phone says Fast charging (or Super fast charging) on the lock screen — if it does not, the negotiation failed and the cause is almost always the cable, adapter or port rather than the battery. If it does say fast charging but still takes hours, you are looking at heat or a worn cell.
Possible causes
Cable or adapter does not support PPS
Super fast charging needs a USB-PD PPS adapter of 25W or more and a cable rated for 3A (5A for 45W). Cheap cables and old 5V bricks will only ever deliver a slow charge.
Lint or damage in the USB-C port
Pocket lint compacts into the port and stops the plug seating fully. Symptoms are slow charging, charging only at certain angles, or the cable falling out easily.
Fast charging switched off in settings
Settings > Battery > Charging has Fast charging, Super fast charging and Protect battery toggles. One of these being off — often after a software update — explains a sudden slowdown.
The phone is too hot
Above roughly 40 C One UI throttles charge current to protect the cell. Charging in the sun, under bedding, or while gaming will always be slow.
Charging from a laptop, car or hub
A USB-A laptop port typically supplies 0.5-1.5A — three or four times slower than a wall charger. Many car and hotel ports are the same.
Wireless charging instead of cable
Wireless is inherently slower and hotter than cable charging, and misalignment on the pad drops it further. A thick or metal-containing case makes it worse.
Worn battery or a failing charging IC
An old cell accepts current more slowly, and a damaged charging circuit or port flex can limit current permanently. Both usually come with extra heat around the bottom of the phone.

Step-by-step solutions
1. Confirm what the phone reports
With the screen locked and the cable in, the lock screen shows Charging, Fast charging or Super fast charging plus an estimated time. If it only says Charging, the fast-charge handshake failed and you should focus on the cable, adapter and port.
2. Turn the charging options back on
Settings > Battery > Charging. Enable Fast charging and Super fast charging, and turn Protect battery off temporarily — with it on the phone deliberately stops at 85%, which many people mistake for a charging fault.
3. Use a proper 25W+ PPS adapter and a rated cable
Borrow a known-good Samsung 25W or 45W adapter and its cable. Charging speed that jumps immediately proves the old accessory is the fault. Cables degrade far more often than adapters, so test the cable first.
4. Clean the USB-C port safely
Power the phone off. Using a torch, gently scrape compacted lint out with a wooden or plastic toothpick, working from the back of the port outwards. Never use a metal pin or needle — the contacts inside bend easily and that turns a five-minute clean into a board repair.
